Goudiya Nritya is a composite art form. It is enriched with, drama, music, poetry, colour and rhythm. The antiquity of Gaudiya Nritya is also based on literature, sculpture and historical evidence. Besides its roots in Natyashastra, its evolution and growth can be traced to the traditions of dance and some of dance forms existing in Gauda Banga. Gaudiya Nritya is an art that is meant primarily for spiritual expression and it was obviously a temple art at the outset. The tradition of Devadasis existed in Bengal from ancient time in temples, till now as the relic of the past we could see Vaishnavite Sevadasis and Nachnis of Purilia. |

In Orissa, Chhau dance of Mayurbhanj region has its own speciality in its style and rhythmic form. There are three styles of Chhau dance prevailing in the eastern region of the country. Other than the Chhau of Mayurbhanj, the two are Saraikella and Purulia. The Mayurbhanj Chhau is performed without mask and the theme of the dance centres around the tales from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, while in Saraikella and Purulia masks are used. Nowadays this dance is stylized and set to choreographic framework. |

Chhau dance of Purulia in West Bengal is one of the most vibrant and colourful folk art forms. Emanating from martial practice. Purulia chhau is a vigorous form of dance drama drawing its themes from the two great Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, Masks and elaborate head gears are the ornamental apparels of the Chhau dancers. The dance commences with an invocation of Lord Ganesh before movements begin as per the story. In a Chhau dance, the fight between good and evil always culminates in the triumph of good over destructive evil. The Chhau masks, the dazzling costumes, the rhythmic drum beatings and the Shehnai characterize the Chhau dance. Powerful movements, immense concentration and release of energy mark this dance form. |

Baul dance and song is very popular all over West Bengal. It is performed either solo or in groups to the anandalahari (popularly known as the gabgubagub) and the ektara and in some cases the Kartali (Cymbals) and dubki (small hand-drum). The dress of the Baul is generally an 'alkhalla', a saffron colour long cloak with turban of the same colour. Sometimes the 'alkhalla' may be of different mystic ideology of their own and the songs have a deeper meaning preaching the transience of mundane existence and their message is religious tolerance and universal brotherhood. The word 'Baul' means mad, i.e. mad with love for the Infinite Self. Both men and women take part in it. The influence of Baul on Tagore is significant. |

It is believed that the gotipuas began their performance in the later medieval period from which the classical Odissi dance evolved. |

The melodious songs and typical bright and colourful sarees and ornaments used by the dancing girls are eye soothing. |

Raibenshe dance comes from the district of Birbhum and Murshidabad of West Bengal. Rai - means royal and bansh or bansha means bamboo. This was used by the infantry soldiers in the middle ages. This vigorous dance form includes mock fighting and acrobatics and is full of vigour. The accompanying musical instruments include the dhak, dhol, kansi and bells tied around their feet (ghumur). Performed by men only, the dance exhibits martial art, very rhythmic in character. |

Bihu, the biggest festival of Assam, is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur during spring or during different stages of cultivation of paddy, the principal crop of Assam. The dance is accompanied by indigenous musical instruments like Bihu Dhol (Drum), Small Cymbals (Tal), Pepa and Toka (a bamboo instrument). |

Manipur has had a long experience of frequent battles against enemis. This made Manipur famous for its ancient martial arts. The Meiteis of Manipur are known as a martial race. The martial arts of the state, namely, Sword fighting, Spear fighting and Wrestling of Manipuri style, reveal the forms of self defence and aggression during war. 'Thang' (Sword) 'Ta' (Spear) dance is really trilling and rhythmic, apart from being a good exercise for body building. Thang-Ta provides mass entertainment. Both boys and girls perform this dance with great valour and spirit solo as also in group. |

The Natua Dance form is a very ancient dance form. There is mention of this art form in the Shiv Puranas. According to ancient belief, this dance form came into existence during the time of the marriage of Shiv and Durga. At that time, there were no musical instruments, so Lord Shiva created the 'Jai Dhak'. The word Natua has probably been derived from the name of Lord Nataraj. The dance is highly acrobatic and involves many tricks with fire etc. Nandi & Vringi the associates of lord Shiva were the first people to perform this dance. This dance form is seen during the Charak Puja and also occasionally on marriage occasions. |
